Conservatives are now calling for a boycott of the National Rifle Association, a gun rights advocacy group, after they announced they would be endorsing a Democrat for Congress. The NRA revealed they would be backing Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat hailing from Alaska, in her bid for reelection. This marks the first time the group has put their seal of approval on a Democrat since 2020, when they supported Collin Peterson, a Minnesota Democrat.
According to The Hill, “Peltola is Alaska’s sole representative and an advocate for the Second Amendment. On her campaign website, she said she owns 176 long guns and dares ‘someone to tread on Alaskan freedoms.’ In a statement to The Hill, she said she campaigned in 2022 on a ‘pro-freedom platform’ and continues that to this day.”
I can understand why conservatives are not too keen on what is normally a right-leaning organization, putting their trust and support into a Democrat, no matter how pro-freedom she claims to be. How do we know she won’t suddenly flip and go along with the typical progressive agenda? Then we lose a seat in the House. We need to keep every single one we can in order to ensure that if former President Donald Trump beats Vice President Kamala Harris in November, he has a unified Congress to help him pass his agenda.
“Guns are an integral part of Alaska’s culture and our subsistence lifestyles,” Peltola explained. “Alaskan gun [owners] are the strongest proponents for responsible gun ownership. We pass down our knowledge and skills to our children.”
She then defended the NRA endorsement by saying that it might work toward helping other Americans understand the culture in Alaska and see the “importance of the Second Amendment in communities.” Again, this all sounds wonderful. These comments are the kind of talking points you’d expect to come out of the mouth of a pro-gun rights advocate. But the real question is whether or not she means it.
No other Democrats in either the House or the Senate have been endorsed by the NRA so far in its 2024 Political Victory Fund. Peltola, a centrist Democrat, has served in Congress since 2022, when she clinched an unexpected win in the deep-red state of Alaska, beating former Gov. Sarah Palin (R). Randy Kozuch, the Chairman of the NRA Political Victory Fund said they endorse candidates who “support and defend the Constitutional right to keep and bear arms” no matter the candidates’ party affiliation.
“In Congress, Representative Peltola has supported efforts to rein in overreach by the ATF, voted for legislation supporting the Second Amendment rights of veterans, and voted in favor of protecting traditional ammunition,” Kozuch remarked in a statement delivered to The Hill. “Given her strong record of support for gun rights and law-abiding gun owners, NRA-PVF is proud to endorse Representative Peltola for re-election.”
This is going to end up causing division, which is already destroying our nation, thanks to the agenda pushing and brainwashing of the masses through propagandists in the media. This could cause some conservatives to be divided and end up causing significant problems when it’s time to vote in November. We need every seat, folks. No time for bickering.
It’s a bad, bad time to be a one issue voter.
