One filthy rich business man and a former mayor of New York City with extremely deep pockets of his own wrote some rather large — we’re talking eight-figures — checks during the month of July for Republican and Democrat super PACs, respectively, in order to help provide funding they each needed for the 2024 presidential race. Big bucks being poured into this race is an indication of just how important it is for determining the future of our nation. People don’t toss this kind of money at politics unless it’s something that’s very important to them.
The filthy rich businessman, Timothy Mellon, donated a whopping $50 million — an amount of money I can’t even picture in my mind — to Make America Great Again Inc., a super PAC supporting former President Donald Trump in his campaign for the presidency, in May of this year. And then, in July, he slapped another $50 million down on top of that. Previously, Mellon’s financial support was being tossed at independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., bringing his grand total for this campaign cycle to $150 million, according to NBC News.
Mellon’s donation made up the vast majority of the $54 million that MAGA Inc. raised in July, new reports filed Tuesday night with the Federal Election Commission show. The group spent $44 million last month, the majority of it on television ads as Republicans continue to ramp up spending in the presidential race. The super PAC closed July with $124 million left in the bank.
So who’s the mayor I mentioned who’s throwing money at Democrats? Michael Bloomberg.
Its Democratic rival, FF PAC, has supported President Joe Biden’s campaign this cycle and is now supporting Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s new standard-bearer. It raised almost $30 million last month, spent $27 million (also primarily on ads) and closed the month with virtually the same amount of money banked away as MAGA Inc., $124 million. After he boosted FF PAC with a $20 million donation in May, Bloomberg directed his fortune to House races last month.
Bloomberg donated $10 million to House Majority PAC in July, which is the first time during this cycle that he’s given to the organization. House Majority PAC is the main Democratic PAC involved with races for the House of Representatives. Must be nice to have that much cash just laying around that you can invest in all the causes you believe in. Most of us can only vote and donate a few bucks here and there. Thanks in large part to most of our money going toward paying for taxes, house payments, health care, and of course, astronomically high prices for groceries.
“House Majority PAC is deeply grateful for the longstanding and continued support from Mayor Mike Bloomberg in our efforts to take back the House,” House Majority PAC President Mike Smith went on to say in a statement delivered to NBC News. “With American freedoms at stake, Mayor Bloomberg’s dedication to Democratic ideals will fuel our work to promote an agenda for working families across America and elect Speaker Hakeem Jeffries next year.”
The donation from Bloomberg took place just a few days after the horrifically bad debate performance from President Joe Biden that ultimately got him pushed out as the Democratic Party nominee. He’s since been replaced by Vice President Kamala Harris.
