Former President Donald Trump has never looked prouder as his 17-year-old granddaughter, Kai Trump, got a chance to share with the world what her grandfather was really like, during her first big political appearance on Wednesday. This isn’t the sort of thing one usually sees at a Trump campaign event and it was extremely heartwarming, providing a window into the real person the former president is, compared to the monster the media has made him appear to be for the last eight years.
Little doubt exists in my mind that Kai Trump’s speech was one of the most critical to be delivered this week during the Republican National Convention, as it served to remind the American people that Trump is an actual, flesh-and-blood human being. He’s not just a political figure. He’s a person who has family that he loves and treasures. It’s a side of him that most have never seen before.

Check out more from Axios:
“I’m speaking today to share the side of my grandpa that people don’t often see,” she said during her father’s Donald Trump Jr.’s Republican National Convention speech Wednesday. “To me, he’s just a normal grandpa.”
“The media makes my grandpa seem like a different person, but I know him for who he is,” she continued in her speech. “He’s very caring and loving; he truly wants the best for this country.”
“And he will fight every day to make America great again,” the 17-year-old former president’s granddaughter concluded.
Donald Trump Jr. has been one of the most visible faces of Trump’s politically involved family members this campaign cycle. Some who were involved during his administration have been scarcely found this year.
Kai Trump is not the only member of the family the RNC audience has heard from during the event. Trump Jr.’s fiance Kimberly Guilfoyle, who formerly worked for Fox News, delivered a speech of her own at the convention, along with wife of Eric Trump, Lara Trump, who is the co-chair of the Republican National Committee.
As of this writing, neither former first lady Melania Trump, nor the former president’s youngest son, Barron, have made appearances at the RNC. This isn’t really surprising when it comes to Melania. She’s always been reclusive, even when Trump was in the White House. She’s not been seen on much of the campaign trail this time around either.
Many of the speeches at this year’s convention in Milwaukee are hitting significantly harder than normal, thanks for the most part to the failed assassination attempt made on Trump last weekend during a campaign rally. However, his response to getting shot, which was to stand up, pump his fist and shout “Fight!” transformed Trump into a legitimate American legend, a hero like those from days of old, and it’s become a talking point for many of the speakers at the event.
The GOP nominee told the Washington Examiner that the speech he’s slated to deliver Thursday was going to slam President Biden’s policies, but he rewrote it to be “a whole different speech” focused on unity.
Throughout the 2020 campaign and the the 2024 rematch, Biden has framed himself as a unifier and Trump as a threat to democracy — but after Saturday’s attack, RNC speakers have tried to flip the script.
You know, it was that kind of fearmongering rhetoric about Trump being the second coming of Hitler and a threat to democracy that riled folks up and led to the shooting that took place last week. It’s time to stop telling lies and exaggerations.
